Cable and DSL Modems

Ratings and Reviews of Cable and DSL Modems

Cable and DSL Modems

In the beginning of broadband (cable and DSL services) you had to rent your cable or DSL modem from your provider - period.  Today,

you have the option of purchasing your own device (rather than paying that monthly charge) that is compatible with the broadband provider's service.  There are a couple of reasons why owning your own access device makes good sense:

  • Prices are continuing to drop - why would you want to continue to pay a monthly charge for all eternity? A $109.00 device for example would pay for itself in 16 months at a rental rate of $7.00 per month.
  • You can choose to "integrate" functionality (cable/DSL modem with integrated firewall, router, wireless access point) or keep things separate (cable/DSL modem and separate router/firewall, wireless access point).  If you go with your service provider's "box", you get what they give you.
  • You can implement a "single vendor" solution - ensuring that when things go wrong there won't be any vendor "finger pointing" before your problem is resolved.
  • You can configure your device/network to meet your needs - not the service provider's!  And, if there IS a problem, it's likely that you can replace your cable/DSL modem faster than your service provider will your rental equipment (a quick trip to your local electronics or PC store....).

So if you think "owning your own" is right for you - a couple of things to remember before you buy.

  • Compatibility - Some service providers (most often DSL providers) require you to purchase your devices directly from them.  Why? to ensure that the device you put on their network will work and will also comply with their service implementation.  Other service providers (most often cable companies) allow you to purchase a cable modem from your local or Internet retailer.  The critical thing in any case is that before you buy, you check with your broadband service provider to ensure that the device you have decided to purchase is compatible with their network/services.  Most providers have an area on their web site (often in a FAQ) that lists compatible products.  If yours isn't on the list, don't expect any help from the service provider if you have problems.

    Google

    Web Home Office Reports
  • Standards Support - This area goes "hand in hand" with compatibility.  In the cable world, look for cable modems that comply with DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 and 2.0 (Data Over Cable Service) which are the current standards implemented.  The DSL world is MUCH more complex (which is why service providers want you to purchase gear from them!).  Important standards are:
    • ADSL Standards - ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, the standard outlines the ability to deliver 6Mbps (not implemented for consumer services)
    • G.992.1 (G.dmt)  - or SHDSL outlines services ranging from 192Kbps to 2.3Mbps
    • G.992.2 (G.lite) - outlines consumer services of 500Kbps up to 1.5Mbps.
    • ITU-T G.992.3 (G.dmt.bis) - downstream speeds to 12Mbps, upstream to 3.5Mbps
    • ITU-T G.992.4 (G.lite.bis) - downstream speeds to 1.536Mbps, upstream to 512Kbps
    • ITU-T G.992.5 ADSL2+ - speeds to 24Mbps
    • ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) - Most DSL services are implemented with ATM as the backbone network protocol.  Look for support of a moderate number of "Virtual Channels" (up to 16), support for Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) services and ATM Adaptation Layer 5 support (AAL5).  Additionally, support for Ethernet over ATM (IEC RFC 1483) and IP over ATM (RFC 1577) are critical, as are PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) over AAL5 (RFC 2364), PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE, RFC 2516) and PPP over ATM (RFC 2364).  Complex, isn't it?
  • Features and Functions - Your cable/DSL modem can be smart or very smart depending upon how you wish to implement your network.  You can purchase a cable/DSL modem that is also a router/firewall/print server/VPN end point or your can purchase a cable/DSL modem and separate devices to serve in any or all of the previously outline functional areas.  It's up to you and what is best for your business and home networking purposes.
  • Manageability - As always, it's critical that the device you purchase is easy to install, configure and maintain.  The best solutions have "smart wizard" to help the "less than geeky" set up a simple yet robust network.  At the same time, for those who love to tinker and customize, "expert" interfaces should be available allowing the owner to "tweak" the network for enhanced performance and/or security.
  • Price  - When is this NOT a consideration?

So without further ado - let's take a look at the options currently available for cable/DSL modem purchasers.  (We have reviewed only those products available through retailers - not those provided directly through broadband service providers - you won't have much choice if you have to purchase from them anyway!)

Note:  We have also included some cable/DSL modems in our Ethernet Networking Equipment and Wireless Home Networking Equipment reviews where the cable/DSL modem was integrated into a more robust firewall/Internet gateway solution.  Please check those pages if you are in the market for an "integrated" multi-port device.

A number of choices at a competitive price.

Cisco

Simple Start-Up - นนน1/2

Cisco's  800 series DSL access routers (in the US ADSL or SHDSL)  include Cisco IOS choices (most centered around security options) and require some networking knowledge to implement successfully.

Cost - $$$

Cisco gear is not inexpensive - it's built for business users.    They make eight routers in their 870 series' that are well suited for "high end" home businesses (we like the 870 series - Integrated Services Routers).  Pricing begins at $309.95 and goes up to $730.90 and more (based on memory and other options).  See our product matrix for details Cable and DSL Modems.

Time Savings - นนนนน

Once you migrate to a broadband service, you'll never go back to dial.  Cisco's DSL/routers will help get you there.

Ease of Use - @@@@

Cisco has done a good job with their Integrated Services Routers to simplify managing their powerful and somewhat complex routing technology.  In the old days, it was the Cisco Command Line Interface only - now these routers have web-based management to simplify setting them up and making them work in a home or small business environment.

Works With - YYYY

The Cisco DSL/routers are platform independent.

Support - pppp1/2

Cisco gear is "top of the line".  It is engineered to the highest standards and meets the needs not only of the home based business owner but many service providers who integrate the equipment into their broadband service offerings.  That says a 'mouthful'.  However, if you want "good" technical support on the Cisco gear, expect to fork out $168.31 per year for Cisco "Smartnet" support.  "Smartnet" gets you four hour on-site response, access to the VERY extensive Cisco support and technical documentation database and the ability to call the Cisco tech center with your problems, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Features - iiii1/2

The 870 series Integrated Services Routers offer a ton of security options and capabilities not present in standard "consumer" or "home" solutions.  Additionally, these routers also offer Quality of Service options and extras like blocking of Java applets and detailed reporting on transactions on a per application, per feature basis.

Overall Rating - %%%%+

It's hard to go wrong if your access device comes from Cisco.  Nothing this good is inexpensive however, so expect to "pony up" some $$'s to get "enterprise class" features and functions.

Features - iii1/2+
