They can save you money if you want to print your own high quality business cards, brochures and other marketing materials in small quantities (instead of paying Kinkos or OfficeMax to print large quantities that you just throw away after you change your email address or telephone number!). They are MUCH faster and have significantly better quality than color inkjets - but that quality and speed, as usual come at a price - both in consumables and in the initial dollar outlay as well. We, at Home Office Reports love our color laser printer, but dread the expense when all the toners, fusers and rollers all hit their maximums at once. So be prepared! As with any product, we believe there are some things you should consider before you purchase that color laser printer.
Therefore, if you print a number of large documents that include a lot of images or graphics, then you'll want to purchase a color laser printer that is fast, has good resolution and lots of memory! If you're printing shorter documents that are mostly text, you can get away with a a slower printer, with lower resolution and less memory. Simple huh?

Time Savings - นนนน Brother's color laser, the HL-2700CN, is relatively fast and can easily handle most home-based business printing requirements. The 3010cn is priced at $299.00 with a 1 year warranty, the 3100cn at $499.00 and the 5110cn at $999.00 with a 1 year warranty, $1,198.00 with a 2 year warranty, $1,248.00 with a 3 year warranty and $1,348.00 with a 4 year warranty.. Time Savings - นนนน Dell's color lasers deliver print speeds between 25 and 40 pages per minute for black and white and 5 to 35 pages per minute for color printing. Plenty of speed for most home business needs. Ease of Use - @@@@ The Dell printers are "networkable" and install simply directly with your system or on your home network.
The 3010cn is compatible with Windows environments only, the 3100cn and 5110cn are Windows, Macintosh, Unix, Linux and NetWare compatible. Support - pppp1/2 Dell offers a one year warranty (with two and three year options) on their devices and has a comprehensive Web support site. They also offer "800" access to support personnel. Features - iiii All of the printers include Ethernet, USB and Parallel ports and a web-based utility for set up, installation and configuration. They also have options for duplexing, extra input capacity and memory. You can add a hard drive to the 5110cn as well. Overall Rating - %%%% Competitively priced, functional color lasers. Good entrants in a new market for this company.

Cost - $$$$ Genicom/Tally offers four printers priced at $499.00 for the T8016, $779.00 for the 8008, $999.00 for the 8026 and $1,999.00 for the T8024. HP's printers work in both Windows and Macintosh operating environments. Support - pppp1/2 HP products carry a one year warranty. HP has a ton of good information on their web site that can help you troubleshoot problems - tips, troubleshooting "walk throughs", forums, FAQ's and more. If you can't find what you need, you can contact tech support via email or phone, 24 hours per day through an HP-sponsored "800" number. Features - iiii All of the functionality you'll need in a color laser including lots of options for input and output trays, memory, double-sided printing and networking (including optional Ethernet print servers and wireless 802.11 connectivity). Overall Rating - %%%% HP and printers are words that have gone together for a long time. They still do. HP's color lasers are solidly built, well priced and the long term cost of operating the printers is competitive as well. Always a "safe" buy.

Cost - $$$1/2 IBM makes four color printers in seven models priced from $754.00 to $3,786.00. Support - pppp1/2 IBM printers are warranted for one year. After than they offer a number of service plans (as well as upgrades to depot repair services). Features - iiii IBM printers have all the capability you are looking for in a color laser, speed, stapling, Post Script font support, double-sided printing, multiple operating system support and even optional wireless connectivity (802.11g). Overall Rating - %%%% IBM makes solid color lasers with lots of support options and capabilities like wireless networking. A good choice from a solid company - but you'll definitely pay the price. Not the cheapest, or even the best at cost per page of the printers currently on the market.

They have competitive performance - 31 pages per minute for black and white and 17 pages per minute color. Ease of Use - @@@@ The KyoceraMita lasers are straight forward to use. Works With - YYYY1/2 KyoceraMita printers work in Microsoft, Macintosh, UNIX and NetWare environments. Support - ppp1/2 KyoceraMita printers have a one year return to dealer warranty. They have an online troubleshooting tool, software downloads and FAQ available on their web site. If you need more help, you must contact your local KyoceraMita dealer. Features - iii1/2+ Basic color laser functionality. The color printers have either installed or optional Ethernet ports for connecting to your home network and optional 802.11b wireless adapters. Some printers also include Compact Flash slots, as well as optional hard drives, duplexing units (two-sided printing), staplers, barcode readers and feeding and stacking trays for paper input/output. Overall Rating - %%%1/2+ For folks who do more printing. The KyoceraMita line of color printers have good performance but you'll pay the price - they don't come cheaply. Again, to get one as with their black and white lasers and multi-function devices, you'll probably have to work with your local "copy" dealer.

Cost - $$$$1/2 Lexmark makes seven color laser printers in eight models that are priced from $349.00 to $2,749.00 (without available options) for home-based businesses. Time Savings - นนนน Lexmark printers can accommodate the needs of most home-based businesses for speed and performance. Their printers range in speed from 20 to 36 pages per minute in black and white and 8 to 32 pages per minute for color printing. Ease of Use - @@@@ Lexmark's printers are easy to use. Works With - YYYYY Lexmark printers are compatible with almost every operating system - Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Unix even Citrix MetaFrame. Overall Rating - %%%%1/2 Lexmark's printer are competitively priced and have every feature and function you'll need in a color laser. Their cost per page using high yield toner cartridges is competitive as well. A sound printer at a competitive price.

In most cases, more than enough speed and performance for the home-based business owner. Ease of Use - @@@@ The Okidata printers are easy to use and set up. Works With - YYYY Okidata's 5100 and 5300 printer line are designed for the Windows environment only, the 7300 and 7500 lines are compatible with Windows, Macintosh, Linux and UNIX operating systems. Support - pppp1/2 Okidata products carry a one year warranty. Other warranty options are available from the manufacturer. The Okidata web site has good technical information on it to help you through minor "sticking points". If you need more help, you can email Okidata or call their "800" number for more information. Features - iii+ Okidata color printers deliver "middle of the road" performance and basic color laser printer functionality. You can get duplexing units and extra feeder capacity as well as lots of network connectivity options for some extra $$'s. Overall Rating - %%%% The biggest plus for the Okidata line is their tech support strategy. Their printers are moderately priced but have high ongoing consumables costs as compared to their competition. Good printers, we do however, wish that Okidata would find a way to lower consumables costs in the near term.

Cost - $$$$ Ricoh makes six printers in eleven models that range in price from $676.95 to $5,343.99. Ricoh concentrates its sales on businesses through resellers. For most Ricoh printers you will have to find a local dealer, most often a copier dealer carrying Ricoh products to find the Ricoh printers). Time Savings - นนนน Ricoh makes laser printers with black and white print speeds of 16.9 to 38 pages per minute and color print speeds of 8 to 35 pages per minute. Support - ppp1/2 Ricoh products carry a one year warranty. They have a very rich technical support area on their web site, but most of the support for your printer (if not all) will come from your local Ricoh dealer. Features - iii1/2 The Ricoh printers deliver all the standard features and functions one would expect from a color laser printer. Overall Rating - %%%% Good printers at a competitive price. The color lasers do have some distribution on the web (you can find around 7 larger web companies that sell these products), but Ricoh really does concentrate their distribution through resellers. If you want one of these printers, find a local company that will support you if something does go wrong.

If that is important to your business - maybe you're an architect, graphics artist, in advertising or a writer and producer of marketing material - then the Xante printers, though costing quite a bit more, are a good investment.
