Design and Charting Software

This is a very interesting "space" in the graphics software category. It's tough to get your arms around, and sometimes difficult to describe. However, in our minds, this area of graphics software is actually very important and one that we use extensively at Home Office Reports.

For want of a better definition, we think that the software best used to illustrate a business "flow", network, building layout and lots more. Therefore, you could call all of these applications "diagramming" solutions. They include clip art, lines, shapes, and lots of tools to help you illustrate things that are tough to describe by words alone (like this area!).

So, what should you think about when you're purchasing Physical Design and Flow Charting software?

Your System: Depending upon the complexity of your diagrams, this software can put a bit of a load on it. Make sure that your PC more than meets the minimum manufacturer's system requirements. If your system can't keep up, you'll be unhappy - and waste valuable time (and your money upgrading after you've experienced a good deal of frustration). Critical system components in the world of physical design and flow charting software are: memory (lots of it!), graphics card (a good one), monitor (flat panel best, big is good in any configuration), the CPU (faster is better) and your hard drive (big is better here too!).
You: Know how much time you are willing to dedicate to learning and using the capabilities the software provides. If you aren't willing to spend the time, don't buy the most powerful, complex package!
Compatibility: File formats - importing and exporting, sending the "complete" diagram to a file format for publication on the web or insertion into your documents or presentations - everything needs to work "neatly" together.
Ease of Use/Training: Is the software easy to use? If the software requires time to understand and use professionally, does the manufacturer provide training (included on the software CD, Web based or partner-based)?
Support: The more complex the software, the more important it is for the manufacturer to stand behind it and help you if you run into trouble. Make sure that the software manufacturer has a robust customer support site and process before you buy!
Features and Functions: If you need it now, make sure it's there. If you think you might need it later, make sure it will BE there if it already isn't!

Upgrade Costs: Once you've invested in software, you'll have to keep investing in the upgrades. Make sure you look into the costs of upgrades (historically) for your software, or if it's brand new product, the track record of the company producing the software.

When you purchase inexpensive software you shouldn't expect much in the way of technical support. Broderbund's implementation is a great example of this methodology. If you need help - the web is your only option. And, when we went there and attempted to find help for a couple of the software packages, one of them wasn't even listed! You'd better hope that the software works on your system, or you've just thrown your money away.

Good design and charting tools. OrgChart Professional is a more comprehensive approach to developing org charts, with the ability to integrate Microsoft Office applications and Crystal Reports for reporting. You can publish to the web, link charts, do calculations and much more. If you need some fast and cheap documents and charts the other Broderbund software will "produce" - but don't offer the robust approach of OrtChart Professional.

Basic physical layout and design tools for simple diagrams and charts. If you just want to communicate simple layouts and charts, most are decent solutions at a competitive price. OrgChart Professional is the exception - a comprehensive and powerful org chart development tool for even larger sized organizations.

The iGrafx software solutions are powerful process and physical design and charting software. As such, you'll need some time to get acquainted. But after you've "met" and come to an "understanding", you'll enjoy the features and functions available in the software.

The Corel support site is comprehensive and well designed. Corel offers training programs online and through third parties as well. They also sponsor newsgroups where users can trade information on using the software, problems and fixes. Additionally, their online knowledge base is comprehensive and easy to navigate. If you need to call Corel from the U.S. you'll pay long distance charges. Canadian customer calls are toll free.

iGrafx Flowcharter offers a robust set of features and functions - all that an accomplished designer or technician will need to communicate a complex flow, network design and more. Process accomplishes the same tasks for testing and documenting business or engineering processes. Very powerful software tools.

iGrafx Flowcharter and Process are strong entries in the physical design and flow charting applications area. They are designed for complex, large corporate implementations and situations. They meet those needs very well, but may be too much (and too expensive) for the needs of most home-based businesses.

Harvard Graphics

Simple Start-Up - ¹¹¹¹

Harvard Graphics offers two software packages - Instant Charts for the amateur with very basic functionality, and ChartXL for the more accomplished user and more complex charting tasks. Users of either package will be able to generate charts quickly and easily.

You can't talk to a "live body" at Upperspace, but their tech support (email, forum, fax) is free. You just have to wait in line to get served. There is always that trade-off between low cost software and quality tech support. The Upperspace web site is however, easy to navigate and use and they have some very good information on the site and posted in the forums that can help you if you run into trouble.
