Dial Modems

Ratings and Reviews of Dial Modems

Dial Modems

Even with the advent of broadband access (DSL and Cable Modems), Ethernet and 802.11b/g/a wireless home networking, the need for

a basic dial modem continues.  Why?

  • Broadband access is certainly NOT available everywhere, leaving basically one alternative - dial-up.
  • Dial is a great "back up" technology for when your broadband access link fails.
  • When you're traveling you'll still find that 802.11b/g/a wireless "hotspots" are NOT universally available and that many hotels do not have Ethernet nor wireless high speed access services.  Again, you'll only have one alternative to access the Internet or your home network - dial.

Now, it may seem that since dial technology has been around so long that one can just grab the first modem off the shelf and find dial-up bliss.  However, before you choose your modem we think you should take the following areas into consideration before you buy:

  • Physical Configuration - Modems come in three basic configurations:
    • Internal - for desktop computers (you'll open your computer up to install them). The standard technology for internal modems is implemented as a PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) card.  PCI in brief, is the architecture for interconnecting your system processor and attached devices (like the modem).  It transmits 32 bits at a time over a 124 pin connection or 64 on an expanded 188 pin connection and comes in 2 form factors - a full size, 312 mm card and a short 119-167 mm implementation for "low profile" systems.
    • PC Card  - A type I, II or II card for your notebook, laptop and even PDAs that accept this type of card.
    • External USB or Serial - a separate "box" (very small these days) that connects to your system using a USB or serial port.

There are "plusses" and "minuses" for each physical configuration - if you purchase an internal modem, you'll have to "open up" your system and insert the card (and perhaps remove a failed one as well).  PC Cards are just for notebooks - and well suited for them as well.  External modems can add clutter to your desktop and add cabling complexity but are very easy to install.

  • Standards - the standards your modem supports will determine the speeds at which it is capable of transmitting data.  Now, before we get into each of the standards and their relative speeds, remember that just because a modem should deliver data at 56Kbps because it supports the V.90 standards, doesn't mean it will.  True transmission speed is effected by the quality of the copper between you and the destination modem as well as regulatory and phone company restrictions you probably aren't even aware of.  (In the U.S. and Canada, a V.90 modem is limited to 53Kbps for downloads and 31Kbps for uploads).  So with that in mind, standards (techie alphabet soup!) that you should keep in mind include:
    • V.90 - ITU (International Telecommunications Union) standard for delivering data downstream to a modem at 56Kbps and upstream at 33.6Kbps.
    • V.92 - has 3 advantages over the V.90 standard.  It delivers data upstream at 48Kbps (versus 33.6Kbps), "trains" or connects with the other modem faster and integrates a "modem on hold" feature that allows users to pause a data call to take a voice call on the same line.
    • Older, Slower Standards - just in case, there are a number of older, slower standards that modems should support which are outlined in the table below.
    • Error Correction and Compression - In an effort to get the most out of the dial connection, modem makers also include error correction and compression capabilities (standards) that you should look for.  MNP5 (Microcom Networking Protocol Level 5) provides 2:1 data compression and MNP4 provides error correction and is included in the V.42 standard listed in the table below.

Creative Labs - Buy Direct and Save!

Standard Speed
V.22 1200 bits per second
V.22bis 2400 bits per second
V.32 4800 and 9600 bits per second
V.32bis 14,400 bits per second, fall back to 12,000, 9600, 7200 and 4800 bits per second
V.32terbo 19,200 bits per second, fall back to 12,000, 9600, 7200, 4800 bits per second
V.34 28,800 bits per second, fallback to 24,000 and 19,200 bits per second
V.34bis 33,600 bits per second, fallback to 31,200 or V.34
V.42 V.32 transfer rates with error correction
  • Compatibility - In the world of the modem, that means compatibility not only with your computer and its operating system, but also its ability to do things like work with your cell phone  (GSM/CDMA) to make a data "call".  If you might need to get email from your car, the ability to use your cell phone with your laptop's modem would be a big plus.
  • Fax - many modems include fax support - again, look out for those standards - Group 1 Fax - 6 minutes per page at 100dpi resolution, Group 2 - 2/3 minutes per page at 100 dpi, Group 3 - 1 minute per page at 200 dpi, Group 4 - 20 seconds at resolutions of 200 or 400 dpi.
  • Voice - This is really more of a consideration for internal modems, but voice support and even telephone answering machine capabilities might be a nice "consolidation" strategy for folks that would like to use their system as their "total" communications system (voice, fax, data).
  • Price - As always, what are you willing to pay?  You'll get exactly what you pay for - more quality and capabilities - more $$'s.
  • Extras - Many modems come packed with software or combined with an Ethernet port on the same card.  Explore all your options and think about how you're planning to connect to the Internet not only right now but in the near future.

So, ready to take a look at what is out there?  We've tried to hit on the majority of modems and their manufacturers.  In fact, the number was so large, that we had to build a separate document with all the choices on them (and relevant information).  You can find this document at:  Dial Modems.

Additionally, we've chosen our favorite modem from every manufacturer.  Just look for the symbol!
