If you've decided to sell products or services over the web, then you already know that making your site "stand out" in the crowd

 

 is important.  But so too are other site characteristics like speed, accuracy and usability.  So, when constructing your e-commerce web site, it's critical to ensure that your site not only has lots of "flash" but is built upon a robust foundation that will support your customers and their needs both now and in the future. 

So, before you purchase your electronic commerce software - a couple of things to think about...

  • Compatibility - will the electronic commerce software you're looking at work with the web development software you have already used to construct your web "presence", or are you going to build everything from "scratch"?  Make sure that your electronic commerce software will not force you to redo all of the work you've already done!
  • The Catalog - do you want to include images, photos or other media files in your catalog?  How many products - and their descriptions and other attributes do you need to include?  The catalog database that is included with your software must meet not only your current needs but your projected ones as well.
  • Security - when it comes down to money, your customers want to make sure that the purchases they make from your site are secure.  Make sure that your software supports SSL (Secure Sockets Layer, now TLS, Transport Layer Security) security standards.
  • Payment methods - credit card processing - and more are available to automate your sales.  Understand your options for transactions - pricing, services and compatibility requirements.

 

  • Language/currency support - the Internet is VERY international.  If you plan to sell to customers outside the U.S., look for software that supports multiple languages, currencies tax rates and shipping methods and pricing.  And more importantly, understand the ramifications to your business in selling internationally from a tax and legal perspective.

  • Taxes and shipping - even if you are going to only do business in the U.S., make sure you purchase software that can accommodate sales tax calculations and collection as well as calculate shipping charges based on the product (weight and size), destination and delivery type.

Although WebShop is nice "stand alone" electronic commerce software, the most attractive "feature" of Boomerang's offerings are their packages that integrate with FrontPage and Dreamweaver.

The most interesting feature in the G7 product is the check processing and printing capability it includes.  Customers can electronically write a check to you and you can print it on your printer and take it to the bank as you would any customer purchase by check.

MIVA

Simple Start-Up - ¹¹¹¹

You can purchase and use MIVA Merchant in three ways - from a web hosting provider whereby you simply use a web-based interface to manipulate and manage the software or from MIVA, whereby you purchase the software and download MIVA's Empresa virtual machine that establishes the connection between the server and the MIVA Merchant software and load into on your company's physical web server (not a hosted one!).  In the first case, getting "started" with the software is straight forward and relatively easy, in the second case, it's a bit more complex.
