Floppy Drives

Ratings and Reviews of Floppy Drives

Floppy Drives

Floppy disks and disk drives are the most "time tested" of the removable storage technologies.  Traditional floppy technology

incorporates 3.5" disks that store 1.44MB of data (not much room in these days of MP3 files, graphics and digital photography) at a cost of around $0.53 per disk or $0.37/MB.  But there are other floppy technologies as well.

  • Zip Drives/Disks - developed by Iomega offer removable storage in 100MB, 250MB and 750MB capacities (media at costs of $5.99 per 100MB disk - $0.06/MB, $4.99 for 250MB disk - $0.02MB, $14.99 for 750MB disk - $0.02/MB).
  • MO Drives/Disks  - from Fujitsu provide 230MB, 540MB, 640MB, 1.3GB and 2.3GB of capacity (media at costs of 230MB for $30.00 - $0.13/MB, $50.00 for 540MB - $0.09, $40.00 for 640MB - $0.06MB, 1.3GB for $60.00 - $0.05/MB, 2.3GB $100.00 - $0.04MB).
  • SuperDisks - Macintosh products provide 120MB capacity (media cost of $7.99/disk or $0.07/MB).

Floppies still serve as an inexpensive way to store and transfer files, and in the case of the higher capacity drive/disks like those from Iomega and Fujitsu, a simple way to back up critical files or images. So whether you just want to replace an malfunctioning floppy drive, add one to your laptop or implement a cheap method of file backup, make sure you take a few things into consideration before you purchase that floppy drive.

  • Form Factor - Internal or external?  Do you have an open drive bay in your desktop or laptop?  Then an internal drive might be the answer.  But if you don't, an external drive is your only option.  And, with an external drive you'll need to make another choice...

    Google

    Web Home Office Reports
  • Interface - USB 1.1 (12 Megabits per second), USB 2.0 (480 Megabits per second) or 1394 FireWire (400 Megabits per second and now FireWire 800 at 800 Megabits per second) are the easy port standards, however, there are also SCSI connected drives on the market (80 Megabits per second) as well as PCMCIA for your laptop.
  • Speed - Transfer Rates - how quickly data moves from across the interface between the drive and the system itself.
  • Capacity - standard (1.44MB)?, Zip (up to 750MB)?, ORB (2.2GB, 5.7GB)?, MO (640MB)?
  • Compatibility - PC or Mac of course, but some drives don't function with some file systems (Windows oriented ones in particular).  Make sure that your OS and file system are compatible with the drive you choose.

So, ready to take a look at what is out there?  We've tried to hit on the majority of floppy disk drives and their manufacturers.  In fact, the number was so large, that we had to build a separate document with all the choices on them (and relevant information).  You can find this document at:  Floppy Drives.  Additionally, we've done a quick analysis that will tell you the cost per MB of every drive and drive size so you'll have an even better idea of what you're paying to store your data.

And, as always, we've chosen our favorite drive from every manufacturer.  Just look for the symbols!
