If the fonts that have come "standard" with your publishing software just aren't good enough for your stylish newsletters, brochures,

reports or other documents, then you just might need some extra fonts, and even font management software. Before we get into what to look for in your fonts and font management software, a quick word/definition on a term you'll often see "bandied" about font literature: TrueType. TrueType fonts are the outgrowth of the computing industry's need for scalable font technology in the 1980's. TrueType was developed by Apple and Microsoft (in league against Adobe at the time). Apple developed the fonts, Microsoft the print engine. So, when you're using an application and can select the font, font size, style, etc., you're probably using TrueType font technology.

Now, some simple things to look for in your font and type design and management software:

Your Printer: This is probably NOT a problem if you're using a printer that is of recent manufacture, but some older printers have trouble getting the output "right" when more exotic fonts and font scaling is used.
Installation: Adding fonts adds to the memory (and hard drive) requirements of your system - the more memory the "merrier".
Compatibility: It's important to ensure that your fonts are compatible with your print or Web publishing software.

Adobe offers a huge number of fonts and type faces that you can purchase individually or in a "collection". All are simple to install and use.

Individual fonts and typefaces are priced on a per typeface/font basis. If you need a specific font, just go to the Adobe site, and enter the keyword to gain access to the font and it's pricing. You get what you pay for. Cheap software - expensive technical support. In fact, technical support, if you need to speak to a "live" body, will cost more than the software itself! $24.95 for the first 10 minutes (and how many tech support calls have you had resolve in 10 minutes or less?) and $2.95 per minute after that. And by the way, this is not an "800" number, you'll be paying long distance charges as well (unless you have one of those new "bundled" local and long distance packages from MCI, SBC or Verizon!). Finally, tech support is only available 7 AM to 4 PM Pacific Monday through Friday (with the exception of Wednesday when they close at 2 PM!). Basically, if you need help - throw out the software and kiss your $20 good-bye!
