They're cheap (at least to purchase them!) you can set them up with ease and they seem to last forever. And as the quality of the output continues to improve and printing speeds get faster, ink jets look like they're definitely going to continue to dominate the market for inexpensive home and business printing solutions. However, there are things to think about before you just plunk $49.99 down for a cheap printer. The biggest one is to remember that if the printer is cheap, the manufacturer is probably making money somewhere else - like on the ink cartridges. So.... As with any product, we believe there are some things you should consider before you purchase that ink jet printer.
You won't find a lot of memory or fancy add-ons for ink jet printers like you will for black and white color lasers, but you will get printers that can meet most of your daily document production needs. So, ready to take a look at what is out there? We've tried to hit on the majority of printers and their manufacturers. Simple Start-Up - นนนน Epson ink jet printers have easy to install print drivers and are straight forward to set up for use. Cost - $$$$ Epson makes five ink jet printers in 9 models. The C88+ is priced at $79.99, the large format printers start at $1,299.95 and top out at $5,995.00. Time Savings - นนนน Epson's ink jets are work horses and will meet the basic printing needs of most home-based businesses. The C88+ delivers 23 pages per minute in black and white and 14 pages per minute in color. The large format printers can deliver very large print jobs in minutes. Ease of Use - @@@@ Epson ink jet printers are very simple to configure. You'll be printing in no time. Works With - YYYY Epson printers are compatible with both Macintosh and Windows operating systems. Support - ppp Epson printers have a one year exchange warranty. The Epson web site has a lot of good technical information on it including downloads, technical tips, FAQs and more. If you need more help with an ink jet, Epson has one option - email only. Features - iii1/2+ Epson printers have high resolutions for the price and some also have borderless photo printing capabilities. Everything you'd expect in an inkjet. The wide format printers are designed for professional use and utilize eight ink cartridges. They include connectivity options including USB, FireWire and Ethernet and can print from 8x10" to 44x60" (depending upon the model). Overall Rating - %%%% Solid printers, very good consumables costs and high print resolutions for the price. Our biggest complaint is their lack of telephone support for their ink jet printer line.

Cost - $$$$ HP makes seven ink jet printers in ten models that are priced from $29.99 to $489.99. Their cost per printed page is competitive (based on printer model). Time Savings - นนนน HP printers for the home business market print at black and white speeds between 10 and 36 pages per minute and color speeds from 8.7 to 27 pages per minute - based on your needs, they can help you and your business save lots of time. Ease of Use - @@@@ HP's printers are straight forward in their implementation and very usable.
Almost all HP printers support both Windows and Macintosh environments, some support Linux as well. Support - pppp1/2 HP products carry a one year warranty. HP has a ton of good information on their web site that can help you troubleshoot problems - tips, troubleshooting "walk throughs", forums, FAQ's and more. If you can't find what you need, you can contact tech support via email or phone, 24 hours per day through an HP-sponsored "800" number. Features - iiii1/2 All of the functionality you'll need in an ink jet including lots of options for networking and oversize printing. Duplexing units are available on some models for two sided printing. Overall Rating - %%%%1/2 HP and printers are words that have gone together for a long time. They still do. HP's ink jets are solidly built, well priced and the long term cost of operating the printers is competitive as well. Always a "safe" buy.

Cost - $$$$ Lexmark makes two ink jet printers The Z735 is priced at $39.99 and the Z845 is $49.99. Time Savings - นนนน Lexmark printers can accommodate the needs of most home-based businesses for speed and performance. Their printers range in speed from 15 to 24 pages per minute for black and white and 5 to 15 pages per minute in color. Ease of Use - @@@@ Lexmark's printers are easy to use. Works With - YYYYY Lexmark printers are all Windows and Macintosh compatible. Many are also compatible with Linux, UNIX and Novell operating systems. Support - pppp1/2 Lexmark printers carry a standard one year warranty, however you can upgrade or extend the warranty coverage and period if you desire (for a price of course). The Lexmark web site has lots of good technical information if you run into trouble. Replacement and more in depth support is provided by local dealers (they'll help you find one on their site). Features - iii1/2 Basic capabilities in ink jets. Some networking extras and oversize paper capabilities. Overall Rating - %%%% Lexmark's printer are competitively priced and have most of the features and functions you'll need in ink jet printer. Their cost per page is not, however industry leading. Good printers, good price - the best feature is their ability to work with almost any operating system.

The GX3000 is $199.00, the GX3050N is $279.00, the GX5050N is $369.00 and the Aficio G700 is $309.95. Their printers deliver print speeds from 20 to 30 pages per minute in both black and white and color. Ease of Use - @@@@ Ricoh's ink jets are straight forward to use. Works With - YYY Ricoh's ink jet printers are designed for the Windows environment. Support - ppp1/2 Ricoh products carry a one year warranty. They have a very rich technical support area on their web site, but most of the support for your printer (if not all) will come from your local Ricoh dealer.
