Label DesignIf you don't want to invest in a more comprehensive publishing tool like Microsoft Publisher or even one of the PrintShop, Print Artist or Print Master packages and you just want to print custom labels for mailing, CD's or DVD's then simple label design and print software is a good alternative. In this segment, we believe the most useful applications are those centered on CD and DVD labeling - especially if you intend to use them as marketing tools (including documents, videos, animations or even a "talking business card") or they are the delivery method for your business' products and/or services. In any case, there are just a few things to consider before you choose your label design and printing software.

Arcsoft has an extensive knowledge base available for support. You can also email them and get answers to your questions, however, you'll have to wait your turn for a reply. Features - iii+ Standard capabilities in a standard package. Overall Rating - %%%+ Basic, competitively priced, CD and DVD labeling software.
Simple Start-Up - นนนนน The "My" software line from Avanquest is designed to offer an easy way for home based and small business owners to produce business labels The "My" line is successful in that endeavor - their software is easy-to-use and doesn't take a lot of time or effort to become acquainted with. Cost - $$$$ Avanquest's My Label Designer Deluxe is priced at $29.95.

In fact, technical support, if you need to speak to a "live" body, will cost more than the software itself! $24.95 for the first 10 minutes (and how many tech support calls have you had resolve in 10 minutes or less?) and $2.95 per minute after that. And by the way, this is not an "800" number, you'll be paying long distance charges as well (unless you have one of those new "bundled" local and long distance packages from MCI, SBC or Verizon!). Finally, tech support is only available 7 AM to 4 PM Pacific Monday through Friday (with the exception of Wednesday when they close at 2 PM!). Basically, if you need help - throw out the software and kiss your $40 or $30 good-bye! Features - iii1/2 Label design and printing - plusses for bar coding capability and integrated address book for mail merges. Overall Rating - %%%1/2 The Avanquest label printing software meets our expectations for designing and printing basic labels. However, if you plan on printing or designing other documents, business cards, stationery, etc., save time and money and purchase a full-featured publishing solution like Microsoft Publisher or one of the Print Shop/Master/Artist series.

Broderbund's implementation is a great example of this methodology. If you need help - the web is your only option. And, when we went there and attempted to find help for a couple of the software packages, one of them wasn't even listed! You'd better hope that the software works on your system, or you've just thrown your money away. Features - iii This is very basic software, if you need something more, invest in a more robust publishing package. Overall Rating - %%%1/2 If you just need to print labels and that is all you ever intend to do (you aren't going to ever want to create business cards, stationary newsletters or other documents), then the Broderbund software is an o.k. solution. We remind you however, that if you end up purchasing labeling software plus business publishing software plus font software, plus click art, you might as well have purchased a good publishing package instead (and you would have saved money too!).

Time Savings - นนนนน You'll be able to design and print labels fast and easily using the Cosmi software. Ease of Use - @@@@@ You'll be up and "printing" fast using these applications. Works With - YYY Cosmi's labeling software is designed for the Windows environment only. Support - ppp Cosmi's tech support area on their web site includes a FAQ, manuals and software downloads. We were unable to find the package listed above on the FAQ. We guess they never have problems with this software! Telephone support is available Monday through Thursday 8:30 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 4 PM Pacific and Fridays 8:30 AM to 12 PM. There is no toll free number, so you are responsible for all long distance charges. Email support is also available. Features - iii1/2 Cosmi's product delivers "just the basics" of label printing and publishing. If you need more or plan to need more in the future, invest in a more comprehensive publishing package. Features - ii1/2 We don't think this package even has the basics - enough said. Overall Rating - %%1/2 Don't bother - pick another package.

All of them are designed with the home user in mind - they're simple and easy to use. Cost - $$$$ CD/DVD Labeler version 4.3 Deluxe Edition is $24.95 for the download, $29.95 for the CD, Office Labeler - $39.95. Upgrade to most current version of CD Labeler is priced at $14.95. CD/DVD Hub Labeler is priced at $9.95. SureThing also offers 100 background images for your CD labels and jewel cases at $9.95.

A good web site, FAQ and discussion group and even an "800" to call if you run into trouble. HOORAY! Features - iii1/2 SureThing is the best answer for media labeling (CD/DVDs), and if you haven't tried Business Card CD's they're great. We use them here at Home Office Reports. They're wonderful when you want customers or potential customers to have the opportunity to delve into your products, service (or you), more deeply at their leisure. And, they're memorable (and harder to just "pitch" than a paper business card)! Overall Rating - %%%1/2+ For CD/DVD labeling - the clear leader.
