Of course, you won't get color, but your documents will look professionally printed and you'll have those large documents in your hands (and not still printing like they would be if you used an ink jet). As with any product, we believe there are some things you should consider before you purchase that laser printer.
Therefore, if you print a number of large documents that include a lot of images or graphics, then you'll want to purchase a laser printer that is fast, has good resolution and lots of memory! If you're printing shorter documents that are mostly text, you can get away with a a slower printer, with lower resolution and less memory. Simple huh? So, ready to take a look at what is out there? We've tried to hit on the majority of printers and their manufacturers. Cost - $$$$1/2 Brother makes eleven black and white laser printers that range in price from $119.99 to $899.99 (without options). Overall Rating - %%%%+ Solid black and white lasers at a very competitive price. Not necessarily the first name you'd think of, but good products and good pricing for the home-based business owner.

The 1110 and 1710's are designed to operate in Windows and Linux environments. Support - pppp1/2 Dell offers a one year warranty (with two and three year options for $39 and $59 respectively) on their devices and has a comprehensive Web support site. They also offer "800" access to support personnel. Features - iii Basic, well priced, black and white laser printers. Overall Rating - %%%1/2 Dell's 1110 and 1710 printers are solid, basic black and white printers that deliver good performance for the price and competitive consumables costs.

Cost - $$$$ Genicom/Tally offers four printers in seventeen models priced at between $299.00 and $2,989.00. In either case their speed and capabilities are in line with making your business more efficient and you more productive. Ease of Use - @@@@ The Tally printers in particular are very simple to use. The 9025 line includes a model with 802.11b wireless LAN as well as parallel, Ethernet and USB 2.0 connectivity. Genicom/Tally also offers a number of printers that are MICR ready and support drawer locks. Overall Rating - %%%% Solid machines at a competitive price and very good cost per printed page on the lower end machines.

Cost - $$$$ HP makes eleven black and white laser printers in thirty-two models that range in price from $99.99 to $2,539.99. Their cost per printed page is competitive (based on printer model). Ease of Use - @@@@ HP's printers are straight forward in their implementation and very usable.
Except for the lowest end printer, the LaserJet 1012 (Windows only), HP's printers work in both Windows and Macintosh operating environments. Support - pppp1/2 HP products carry a one year warranty. HP has a ton of good information on their web site that can help you troubleshoot problems - tips, troubleshooting "walk throughs", forums, FAQ's and more. Features - iiii All of the functionality you'll need in a black and white laser including lots of options for input and output trays, memory, and networking including wireless connectivity. Duplexing units for two-sided printing are available for many models. Overall Rating - %%%% HP and printers are words that have gone together for a long time. They still do. HP's black and white lasers are solidly built, well priced and the long term cost of operating the printers is competitive as well. Always a "safe" buy.

Overall Rating - %%%%1/2 Lexmark's printer are competitively priced and have every feature and function you'll need in a black and white laser. Their cost per page using high yield toner cartridges is competitive as well. A sound printer at a competitive price.

Ease of Use - @@@@ The Minolta-QMS printers are easy to use and set up. Works With - YYY1/2 The 1400W line supports Windows only. The 9100 line supports Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Support - ppp1/2 Minolta-QMS products carry a one year warranty. Other warranty options are available from the manufacturer. The 9100 line has very good ongoing costs, the 1400W line is not as competitive in that area. If you have the money, the 9100 is a good printer with highly competitive consumables costs and good performance as well.

Time Savings - นนนน Okidata makes laser printers with print speeds of 19 to 45 pages per minute. In most cases, more than enough speed and performance for the home-based business owner. Ease of Use - @@@@ The Okidata printers are easy to use and set up. Works With - YYY The Okidata printer line is designed for the Windows environment only. Support - pppp1/2 Okidata products carry a one year warranty. Other warranty options are available from the manufacturer. The Okidata web site has good technical information on it to help you through minor "sticking points". If you need more help, you can email Okidata or call their "800" number for more information. Features - iii With the exception of their highest end printer, the B8300n, designed for smaller printing environments, the Okidata printers deliver only moderate performance, and very standard features and functions. Enough for most home businesses however. Overall Rating - %%%1/2 The biggest plus for the Okidata line is their tech support strategy. Their printers are moderately priced with moderate ongoing costs per printed page. You won't get a lot of "bells and whistles" with the Okidata line, but they do make good printers for most basic printing tasks.

Cost - $$$$ Ricoh makes six printers in eight models that range in price from $249.99 to $11,667.02. Ricoh concentrates its sales on businesses through resellers. For most Ricoh printers you will have to find a local dealer, most often a copier dealer carrying Ricoh products to find the Ricoh printers). Time Savings - นนนน Ricoh makes laser printers with print speeds of 22 to 75 pages per minute. Relatively fast, but you'll pay for the speed. Ease of Use - @@@@ The Ricoh printers are easy to use and set up. Works With - YYYYY Ricoh printers operate in Windows and Macintosh environments as well as NetWare, Linux and Unix. Support - ppp1/2 Ricoh products carry a one year warranty. They have a very rich technical support area on their web site, but most of the support for your printer (if not all) will come from your local Ricoh dealer. Features - iii1/2 The Ricoh printers are fast - and the 3200, 610 and 8100 series have lots of "add-ons" for you - envelope feeders, mail-bins, sorters, staplers, duplexing units and more. Overall Rating - %%%% Some of the fastest printers for the price on the market. However, to get one, you'll have to find a local Ricoh dealer - not always an easy task, and hope they'll sell you a "one off" - as again, most of them are focused on delivering print and copy solutions to small, medium and large business. With that said, solid printers at a competitive price - and speed to burn for the cost.

Overall Rating - %%%% Samsung printers deliver good performance at a very competitive price. The only problem with the Samsung offerings is that their cost per page over the long term is relatively high versus the competition. But if you don't print in high volumes, a good buy.

If that is important to your business - maybe you're an architect, graphics artist, in advertising or a writer and producer of marketing material - then the Xante printers, though costing a bit more, are a good investment.
