Ratings and Reviews of Photo Printers

Photo Printers

Having a digital camera and sharing your photos on the web and in email is great, but sometimes you want to hold that photo in your hand.  Maybe you're in real estate and need to print out a quick photo of a property or significant asset of a property (a

pool, a room, out building, etc.).  Or maybe you're a business professional and need a digital "mug shot" that you can print and forward in marketing and promotional material as part of your public relations strategy.  Any of these scenarios makes a photo printer a critical investment and important "image" factor tin the success of your home-based business.

However, there are things to think about before you just plunk $49.99 down for a cheap printer.  The biggest one is to remember that if the printer is cheap, the manufacturer is probably making money somewhere else - like on the ink cartridges.  So....

As with any product, we believe there are some things you should consider before you purchase that photo printer.

  • Cost - not just the purchase price, but the cost of printing each page (cartridges).
  • Speed - the number of pages per minute the printer can produce.
  • Resolution - the bigger the numbers the better (in "dots" per inch).
  • Memory  - more is better here too (improves speed, especially for large or image intense documents).
  • Interfaces - for you camera or other imaging device (CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, Secure Media, etc.) PC, your network or all of the above.
  • Borderless Printing - the ability to print the image to the edge of the page or with a very small border.
  • Compatibility - Windows, Macintosh, Linux and more - and especially from an imaging standpoint, make sure your printer is compatible with DCF (Design Rule for Camera File System) standards like EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) - you'll often see the EXIF logo on printers that support the standard .Exif Print
  • Media Handling - amount of paper you can put in the tray and types of photo and other paper (including envelopes, transparencies and size varieties).
  • Service and Support - always "big" with us, the warranty, service strategy and contact capabilities.

A word of caution, if you expect to use your photo printer as your "office printer" as well, beware of the consumables cost!  Generally, these printers use more expensive "photo" ink cartridges and print default mode, print at a very high "dpi" (dots per square inch) level that is ink resource intensive.  So make sure that you understand all the costs before you just choose a photo printer to meet all of your printing needs!

So, ready to take a look at what is out there?  We've tried to hit on the majority of printers and their manufacturers.  In fact, the number was so large, that we had to build a separate document with all the choices on them (and relevant information).  You can find this document at:  Photo Printer Detail - Product Matrix.

Additionally, we've chosen our favorite printer from every manufacturer.  Just look for the symbol!
