Postage and Shipping

Ratings and Reviews of Postage and Shipping Companies

Postage and Shipping

Postage and shipping services can be broadly divided into four main categories:

  • The U.S. Postal Service - The entity we know and "love", delivering our mail (bills, junk, business-related, personal), certified and registered mail and parcel post as well as supplying mail boxes for those of you not wishing to use a home address for your business.  The Postal Service also now has a relationship with FedEx for shipping as well.

  • Internet Postage and Postage Meters - Hate remembering to buy stamps and/or going to the post office or your local shipping store all the time?  Internet postage or a postage meter is a great solution.  Simply "pre load" your account or the meter, and print out postage as you need it.  Then drop your mail off at a local post office box or store.

  • Shipping Companies - If you need overnight delivery or you are sending heavy items, you'll need to use a shipping company.  Some are aligned with your credit card (American Express in particular) and offer online billing and package tracking as well as package pick-up at your door.
  • Local Shipping, Mailbox Store - If you don't want to use your home address for your business and want options in how you ship packages or have documents "over-nighted", a local shipping store can be an option.  Often owned by local entrepreneurs like yourself, these stores can be helpful when you don't ship or mail much and don't want to spend the time figuring out the best way to ship.  Also, most do the packaging for you - so if you don't have boxes, foam "peanuts", tape and string and have no desire to purchase those items and spend the time "wrapping", your local shipping store is a "God-send".  Many now too have other "office services" like copying, printing and even online "electronic secretaries".  Building a relationship with another local entrepreneur can be a big help in moving your business forward.

NOTE:  Our cost-effectiveness evaluation of shippers was based on a 5 lb. shipment going from Texas to Michigan (residence), that we 'dropped off' at the facility of the shipper (no pick-up charges).  We did not insure the package nor compare any of the "extra services" that are available such as delivery appointments, signature requirements, after 6 P.M. delivery or insurance.

DHL

Simple Start-Up - ¹¹¹¹

DHL specializes in international deliveries, so if are planning on shipping something to Europe, or even Afghanistan, DHL can get it there (DHL is owned by Deutsche Post Worldnet.  DHL is also in the process of acquiring Airborne, another leader in international shipping services).  DHL, like all of the shipping companies offers a "calculator" on their web site where you can enter the characteristics of your shipment (origin, destination, weight, packaging, value) and get a rate on your shipment based on your delivery needs.

Cost - $$$$+

DHL's domestic shipping prices are, across the board, lower than that of Fed Ex and UPS.  For our "test" shipment (outlined above), DHL prices were:  Ground - $6.01, Express (2nd Day) - $18.25, next day by 3:00 PM $43.73, by 12:00 PM $52.02, by 10:30 AM $53.21.

Time Savings - ¹¹¹

If our business was to "drop off" the package at the nearest DHL service center, we would have to drive more than 30 miles.  What we're saying is that DHL has a limited set of drop off locations when compared to their competitors.

Ease of Use - @@@@

DHL offers software for shipping and tracking (if you do a lot of that!), just as their director competitors do.  The DHL web site and software are usable and straight forward.  You can also order shipping supplies directly from DHL on their web site.

Works With - YYYY

DHL's software is designed for the Windows world, however MAC users have the option of doing their business with DHL via the web site.

Support - pppp

DHL is now a very large, global corporation backed by what was the German post office.  One can view that as positive or negative, however, if you're doing business internationally, DHL has strong political ties and capabilities in a multitude of locations outside the U.S.

Features - iiii

DHL offers a lot of options in their international services portfolio and matches those of Fed Ex and UPS domestically - ground, 2nd day, next day by 3 PM, next day by 12 PM, next day by 10:30 AM and Saturday delivery.

Overall Rating - %%%%

If you need to ship something internationally, DHL is a great solution, and their domestic pricing is very competitive.

Endicia

Simple Start-Up - ¹¹¹¹

Endicia allows you to print postage directly from your PC and printer (no need for a postage meter!).  Using standard envelope or label layouts and the Endicia software, you simply type in the address (or choose one from the address book that synch's up with the ones you have stored in either Outlook or ACT!), the weight (Do you have a scale?  If not, you'll need one!) and the class of mail.  Endicia checks the address to make sure it is valid and then you print the postage.  Postage is purchased through the Endicia software's interface over your Internet connection to Endicia.

Cost - $$$1/2

Endicia has two postage services.  The Standard plan is priced at $9.95 a month (or $99.95 per year - save $19.45) giving you the basics - software, address collection and the ability to print postage for standard mail services, parcel post, international mail, express mail and insured mail.  The Premium Plan, priced at $15.95 a month ($174.95 a year - save $16.45) includes the ability for you to "hide" postage costs (if you're shipping to a customer and rebilling at a higher cost), customize shipment email notifications, integrate with auction management and order fulfillment software from companies such as Zoovy, Ship-Logic and MailExtractor.com, view in depth transaction reports, print a shipping record, invoice or receipt next to the shipping label, print pre-paid return shipping labels, view the delivery time for all your packages and customize business reply mail for your customers.  If you're a Macintosh user the Premium Plan costs the same (now!) - $15.95 per month ($174.95 per year, save $16.45).

Time Savings - ¹¹¹¹

If you hate going to the post office as much as we do, Internet postage is a wonderful solution to the problem (we know, we use it)!

Ease of Use - @@@@

The Endicia software and services are simple to install and use right away!  The biggest problem is often just keeping labels in your house to print on and making sure your printer is loaded, has enough ink/toner in it and you've chosen the correct label format for your shipment.

Endicia Internet Postage Screen Shot: Christmas Card Envelope with Red, Green and Gold Graphic, Happy Holidays Rubber Stamp, Green and Red Barcoded Address, and Postage Indicium

Works With - YYYY

Endicia's software is designed for the Windows world.

Support - pppp

Endicia is one of the "survivors" of the Internet postage wars.  They've been around as long as anyone and their services and software work well.   Endicia has an "800" number to contact their support center (available Monday through Friday 7 AM to 5 PM Pacific - hope you don't have problems any other time) and an easy to navigate and helpful support area on their web site.  We agree with Endicia, that the most common problems you'll run into center around your printer or the formatting of the labels.

Features - iiii

Endicia's premium services are extensive and well positioned to companies or individuals participating in the world of ecommerce - either through a web site or eBay (see the cost effectiveness section above).  Their standard services however, lack the ability to print regular "stamps".  If you can't type in an address, you can't use your Endicia postage to mail your letter, check or package.

Overall Rating - %%%%

If you are selling items from a web site or eBay and shipping them from your home or other local repository, Endicia has a wonderful mailing and shipping solution for you.  Their Premium Service is the best we've seen for home-based electronic commerce-based shipments.

FedEx

Simple Start-Up - ¹¹¹¹

FedEx really works hard to making shipping your domestic or international package or document simple and straight forward.  Using the FedEx web site, you can quickly and easily choose the 'right' service for your shipment - by delivery date and "extra's" like requiring a signature, setting up an appointment for delivery and more.  Their international tools are very nice in that they walk you through shipping your international package in four steps, all the while giving you the information you'll need to prepare the documents - and ready yourself for the taxes and duties you'll incur - with your shipment.

Cost - $$$$

FedEx's shipping rates are competitively priced.  For our "test" shipment (outlined above), FedEx prices were:  Ground - $8.95, 2 Day $25.28, standard overnight $49.28, next day by 10:30 AM $55.80, next day by 8 or 8:30 AM $84.93.

Time Savings - ¹¹¹¹

If our business was to "drop off" the package at the nearest Fed Ex service center, it would be a short 5.9 mile trip.  A FedEx box is located a mere 1.1 miles from our "home base" and an "authorized shipping center" .34 miles.  What we're saying is that it is VERY simple to get your package to FedEx (and not incur pick-up charges).

Ease of Use - @@@@

FedEx offers a comprehensive and easy to use Web site.  If you do a lot of shipping, FedEx also offers software for your PC that helps you quickly print labels, track your packages, understand your charges and more.

Works With - YYYY

FedEx's software is designed for the Windows world, however MAC users have the option of doing their business with FedEx via the web site.

Support - pppp

FedEx delivers - both domestically and internationally.  Their reputation and continued success are based on their strong track record for delivering innovative services reliably and competently.

Features - iiii

FedEx has a comprehensive range of shipping options - domestic, international, freight (including international freight), software, web site and more.

Overall Rating - %%%%

FedEx offers a wide range of shipping services - that you can reach from your PC, their Web site, your local FedEx center, a FedEx drop box or authorized shipper.  Need we say more?

Hasler

Simple Start-Up - ¹¹¹¹

Anyone who has worked at even the smallest corporation has probably used a postage meter at some point.  Put your mail on the scale, decide how you're sending it (first class, priority, etc.), print the label (or on some machines, send the envelope through) and apply the label (or not if you've printed on the envelope!).  In the past, the "hassle" was going to the post office to reload the postage.  Today's models allow you to purchase postage electronically (with their internal modems) quickly and easily.

Cost - $$$1/2

You don't "buy" a postage meter, you "rent" it from a local dealer (or the manufacturer).  In the case of Hasler, they'll rent their "SOHO" solution, the PostLink directly to you for $14.95 per month (including a 5 lb. scale).  This device is targeted at businesses that post fewer than 25 letters per day.  Their "WhisperJet" Mailing Systems (WJ20, 20 envelopes per minute; WJ65, 65 envelopes per minute; WJ95, 95 envelopes per minute) rent at rates beginning at $15.95 per month (WJ20) and rise with the capabilities of the system.  Hasler also offers Postal Consultant software for your PC -  we were unable to locate pricing for this software.  Again, you'll have to find a local dealer and work with them to price out the solution best for you and your business.

Time Savings - ¹¹¹¹

Saving trips to the post office is a huge benefit for acquiring a postage meter.  Even if you use the USPS' stamps by mail, a postage meter saves all of that weighing and licking (or self-adhesiving).  Additionally, a postage meter ensures that you are not putting too much postage on your letters or packages by including an accurate postage scale (and important device, even if you don't have a postage meter!).

Ease of Use - @@@@

Postage meters are operationally among the most simple devices you can own.  The problems that usually arise center around label feeding and loading more than anything else.

Works With - YYYY

It works with the USPS - that's what matters!

Support - pppp

Postage meters are "tried and true" devices.  With Hasler and all the other manufacturers, service is provided by the local dealer, so make sure the one you choose is going to be there if something goes wrong.

Features - iiii

Hasler offers a variety of machines with a variety of functions and capabilities.  It all depends on what your business needs.  If all you do is mail letters (service), get the best one - you'll need it.  Otherwise, for most businesses, a PostLink system is probably more than enough.  Hasler also offers Postal Consultant PC software that print postage, ship packages with pre-printed USPS labels and track certified mail, priority mail and parcel post packages.

Overall Rating - %%%%

Hasler makes a nice line of postage meters - the PostLink "SOHO" solution that includes a 5 lb. scale for $14.95 a month is a good choice for most home business owners who have the need to send letters and packages, but not in overwhelming amounts.  Postal Consultant software is another option for home business owners and is competitive with offerings from Endicia and Stamps.Com.

The UPS Store (Mail Boxes, Etc.)

Simple Start-Up - ¹¹¹¹¹

The UPS Store, offers a complete range of services for the home based business owner (depending upon the location - this is a franchise operation).  At your local Mail Boxes, Etc. (UPS Store) you can - get your items packaged for shipment, ship documents and items (UPS and USPS), print or copy documents or other business items, rent a mailbox, rent computer time (if yours experiences a problem!), purchase office and mailing supplies, get documents notarized, get a passport photo, recycle your packing "peanuts", get a rubber stamp made and transfer money.  Whew!

Cost - $$$$

Cost effectiveness for a local shipping store can be calculated in two ways - 1.  The time you save in NOT doing the packaging and running around to various places to get an item copied, prepared and shipped.  2.  The ability to "shop" for the best shipping solution -without spending time on the various shippers web sites figuring out who has the best price.  For The UPS Store - your choices will now be a bit reduced in this area - USPS or UPS.  However, the convenience and time-savings you get by using a store like this remain significant.

Time Savings - ¹¹¹¹¹

A "one stop shop" for many small business services you'll need makes building a relationship with your local The UPS Store a good idea - and a real time saver!

Ease of Use - @@@@@

With The UPS Store doing most of the work for you - how could their services be anything by highly usable?

Works With - YYY1/2

The UPS store has a "company" focus.  This will limit their ability to "shop" shipping rates among multiple carriers.

Support - pppp

As The UPS Store is a franchise operation, you'll have to make sure that your local store is owned and staffed by folks that care about you and your business.  If they aren't, there are other options (we review here) for you in the shipping store segment.  Choose the store and the store ownership and staff that is willing to meet your specific business requirements.

Features - iiii

The UPS Store locations offer a wide range of services - packaging, shipping, copy and print services, mailboxes, computer services, office and mailing supplies, notary public, passport photos, recycling, rubber stamps and money transfers.

Overall Rating - %%%%1/2

The UPS Store has established itself as a "good brand" in the shipping store market segment.  We like shipping stores for their convenience and variety of services that you can receive - pronto!  If your local The UPS Store franchise offers the services you need, is convenient and the ownership and staff are focused on helping you out - using a The UPS Store franchise will be a wise, and time-saving choice for you and your business.

neopost

Simple Start-Up - ¹¹¹1/2

Anyone who has worked at even the smallest corporation has probably used a postage meter at some point.  Put your mail on the scale, decide how you're sending it (first class, priority, etc.), print the label (or on some machines, send the envelope through) and apply the label (or not if you've printed on the envelope!).  With neopost, three of their SOHO solutions retain the "hassle" of going to the post office to reload the postage.  Only the IJ25 model allows you to purchase postage electronically (with their internal modems) quickly and easily.

Cost - $$$

You don't "buy" a postage meter, you "rent" it from a local dealer (or the manufacturer).  In the case of neopost, they'll rent one of their four "SOHO" solutions:  The SM22 with thermal imaging and the ability to add slogans and logos to your postage goes for $39.95 per month (two year contract, $479.40 per year).    neopost also offers their more advanced IJ25 postage meter with integrated modem for downloading postage and a 4 lb scale for $22.95 per month (2 year contract, $275.40 per year) or $16.95 per month with a 3 year contract ($203.40 per year).  We wonder why you'd rent anything other than the IJ25 package.  Somewhat higher volumes are also available in the IJ40 - 65 letters per minute, and IJ50 - 95 letters per minute.

Time Savings - ¹¹¹1/2

Saving trips to the post office is a huge benefit for acquiring a postage meter.  Even if you use the USPS' stamps by mail, a postage meter saves all of that weighing and licking (or self-adhesiving).  Additionally, a postage meter ensures that you are not putting too much postage on your letters or packages by including an accurate postage scale (and important device, even if you don't have a postage meter!).  But make sure you rent the IJ25 package, if you don't, you'll still be running to the post office to reload your meter!

With neopost's SOHO solutions, you'll contact them directly for support.  Their support web site is comprehensive and they have an 800 number to call (normal business hours only).  You can, however, enter a service request at any time on their web site.

Features - iii1/2

neopost's meters are "middle of the road" in features and functions and are competitive with other offerings in this segment.

Overall Rating - %%%1/2

neopost offers solutions for the home based business.  However, we believe that their prices are quite high relative to the offerings of other providers of postage meters - or Internet-based postage companies.

Postage meters are "tried and true" devices.  Pitney Bowes has an extensive web site for customer support and postage reloading as well as an "800" number for immediate response.  You can also request service for your postage meter using the web site.

Pitney Bowes offers a variety of machines with a variety of functions and capabilities.  It all depends on what your business needs.  If all you do is mail letters (service), get the best one - you'll need it.  Otherwise, for most businesses, a Personal Post system is probably more than enough.  They also offer a pure software solution for parcel and large envelope shippers - ShipStream which provides a way to print USPS labels and keep a log of all parcels and oversize objects shipped.

Pitney Bowes postage meters have been around for a very long time.  A solid choice from a reliable manufacturer.

Postal Annex

Simple Start-Up - ¹¹¹¹¹

The Postal Annex is a franchise operation with stores in many areas of the U.S.  Postal Annex stores offer a comprehensive range of services for the home based business owner (depending upon the location these are independently owned and operated stores, so not all services may be available at a location near you).  At your local Postal Annex store you can - get your items packaged for shipment, ship documents and items (UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL), ship heavyweight items or cargo, purchase moving or packaging supplies, get documents notarized, print or copy documents or other business items, rent a mailbox, rent computer time, pay utility bills, purchase office and mailing supplies,  send and receive faxes, purchase a calling card and perform wire transfers.

Postal Annex has a good variety - UPS versus FedEx versus DHL versus USPS to aid in getting you the best deal on your specific shipment.

Time Savings - ¹¹¹¹¹

A "one stop shop" for many small business services you'll need makes building a relationship with your local Postal Annex store a good idea - and a real time saver!

Postal Annex is a franchise operation.  That means that each store is individually owned and operated.  You'll have to make sure that your local store is owned and staffed by folks that care about you and your business.  If they aren't, there are other options (we review here) for you in the shipping store segment.  Choose the store and the store ownership and staff that is willing to meet your specific business requirements.
