Ratings and Reviews of Powerline and Phoneline Equipment

Powerline and Phoneline Equipment

Have you decided that a Phoneline or Powerline network is right for your home based business' networking needs?  Before you

jump in there are just a couple of things to remember.

  1. Although Phoneline and Powerline networks are relatively inexpensive to purchase they are "relatively" slower than a "wired" technology such as Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps versus 10 Mbps for a Phoneline network and 14 Mbps for a Powerline network) or more popular and flexible wireless implementations (802.11g operates at 54 Mbps!).  In fact, it is unclear how long manufacturers will continue to build and support these products (3Com recently discontinued their HomeConnect line and Intel their AnyPoint products).
  2. Powerline networks are limited to 990 feet (hope you don't have a "huge" house to network!) - but Phoneline networks require specific cards in every PC (Powerline networks don't, they can use Ethernet or USB).
  3. You're relying on the infrastructure in your home.  So if you're in the midst of major remodeling or you live in a real 'fixer upper' that needs significant wiring work, another type of network might be a better choice.
  4. Make sure that the the manufacturer you choose is going to be around for a while - and can support you.  Believe us, you'll probably run problems at some point, and you'll want to know that there will be intelligent life answering your questions when you call.
  5. Be sure you understand what you need to do on each PC in Windows or MAC OS before you start!  Setting up file and print sharing, peering and more MUST be configured - or you will have physical connectivity and no ability to share ANYTHING!
